One common misconception is that coated glass needs no maintenance and cannot scratch. Protective treatments can make glass easier to clean and reduce common surface problems, but they do not make glass scratch-proof or eliminate the need for proper care.

Silica, minerals, and changing surface conditions.

Glass is composed largely of silica, along with minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and iron. Its surface and an applied treatment can change over time. Water also carries minerals that can interact with the glass and leave visible deposits.

Minerals and other contaminants left on the surface can create water spots and contribute to corrosion or oxidation. High-water environments such as shower doors therefore need regular care.

Bond longevity and hydrophobic performance.

Water spots can still occur on coated glass. What matters is how easily they can be removed and how quickly they become visible. A durable bond can help hydrophobic, or water-repellent, performance last longer and simplify routine cleaning.
